Founding events in species invasions: genetic variation, adaptive evolution, and the role of multiple introductions.
Invasive species are predicted to suffer from reductions in genetic diversity during founding events, reducing adaptive potential. Integrating evidence from two literature reviews and two case studies, we address the following questions: How much genetic diversity is lost in invasions? Do multiple introductions ameliorate this loss? Is there evidence for loss of diversity in quantitative traits...
متن کاملPKR evolution in viral defence
The innate immune system provides the first line of host defense to pathogens. Part of this response is mediated by the cellular RNA-activated protein kinase, PKR. In a recent article published in the journal Nature [1], findings on the rate of evolution of PKR and how it relates to K3L, a pseudosubstrate viral mimic from poxviruses, are presented. The authors employ an impressive diversity of ...
متن کاملRapid evolution of mimicry following local model extinction.
Batesian mimicry evolves when individuals of a palatable species gain the selective advantage of reduced predation because they resemble a toxic species that predators avoid. Here, we evaluated whether-and in which direction-Batesian mimicry has evolved in a natural population of mimics following extirpation of their model. We specifically asked whether the precision of coral snake mimicry has ...
متن کاملPleomorphic carcinoma showing rapid growth, multiple metastases, and intestinal perforation.
Pleomorphic carcinoma is a rare and very aggressive subtype of lung cancer that tends to grow rapidly and invade adjacent structures. Here we report a case of pleomorphic carcinoma with rapid growth, multiple metastases, and intestinal perforation. A 46-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of lung abscess. Several antibiotics were administered for 2 weeks, but his condition did not...
متن کاملRapid growth of small, asymptomatic meningioma following radiosurgery.
The authors present the case of a 62-year-old woman with rapid enlargement of a meningioma following radiosurgery (RS). Previous slow growth of the tumor over a 3-year period and the radiological signs of benign meningioma had been confirmed by successive MR scans. Histopathological examination performed after successful surgical removal revealed an atypical, infiltrating meningioma.
